Kitsune, doing as ever what she can to get by, (Neh?) finds a letter that someone must have 'dropped'. This causes all sorts of misunderstandings and the local constabulary are dispatched to find her.
Gen and Usagi are stopped and questioned by the police as they pass through the town, however can offer little assistance. Discovering soon enough that it is Kitsune that is behind the trouble, Usagi is hardly surprised and Gen is hardly able to stop his tongue dragging in the dirt.
Over a meal, Gen is easily convinced of Kitsune's integrityand they discover that the letter she 'found' is a note informing anoil seller of a rebellion that is likely to cut off oil supplies to theregion. Kitsune takes her leave of the two ronin and her scream is heard not long after she steps outside.
Finding her pack, the two track her to the residence of the letter's owner - Yuden the oil seller. Seeking to exchange the letter for Kitsune, Yuden becomes somewhat less enthusiastic when he learns that the letter has been read and orders the three killed. However, when Usagi takes Yugen hostage, it becomes a reasonably easy matter for the three to escape. The third rate rabble that the merchant has hired are not overly enthusiastic in their pursuit after having seen several of their fellows dispatched.
Finding an inn, they discover through the tale of Aburage, a rival oil seller that the letter was a fake, invented by him to gethis revenge on the other. Usagi and Gen react somewhat differently andUsagi decides to stop meddling in other's business at Gen's 'request'.
Morning finds Gen in high spirits (although Kitsune has left) and ready to travel. Usagi flips Gen some travelling money, as Kitsune as always, does what she can to get by, and Usagi, heeding the advice of his best friend - did not want to meddle.
