Story Synopsis

Gen and Kitsune are traveling together; they stop at a roadside cafe and buy a meal. While they eat, a young girl tries to steal Gen's purse; he's too fast for her, though, and catches her. Gen grumbles and threatens, but Kitsune shushes him; she tells the girl, Kiyoko, to be more careful, and sends her away. The girl flees, and the two move on.

Later that night, the travelers arrive at an inn; they decide to stop for the night. Kitsune is clearly affected by seeing that young thief earlier; she tells Gen her history. Her father was a merchant; his wife died, and he married a woman who immediately sold Kitsune to an inn in a far away town. Later, the inn sold her to a brothel; she didn't like that idea much, and ran away. She found herself in Edo, penniless and hungry. She tried to steal some food from a vendor's cart, but got caught in the act. She was almost caught by the police, but met a woman named Sachiko who helped her escape. Sachiko liked the looks of this youngster, and decided to teach her how to be a thief. The two had many adventures and made a lot of money, until Sachiko robbed the wrong man--a samurai who decided to take the law into his own hands, and dispense justice with his own blade. Kitsune had been alone ever since then...but seeing that girl makes her think that maybe it's time she had her own student. As she leaves to look for the girl, she hands Gen's purse to him; Gen claims that he knew she wouldn't keep it. Kitsune kisses Gen before she leaves, and while he grumbles as usual, he also smiles a bit...
