CharactersThe following characters are mentioned in the story: Story SynopsisIt was a dark and stormy night. Sounds cliche? Don't worry, it gets better. Much better. Usagi finds himself at the cruel mercy of the elements until he stumbles upon a house. Battering the door, he is greeted by a disturbing figure who introduces himself as Jei. Apologising for disturbing Jei's home, Usagi is somewhat startled to learn that the actual owner of the place was 'executed' for being evil. As Jei talks and cleans his yari, the firelight catches his blade and it is reflected as black as the night outside, which Usagi exclaims before he can stop himself. Knowing that a samurai's blade is a reflection upon his soul, Usagi apologises and they agree to call it a trick of the light before Jei settles down to sleep. Usagi, bitterly cold despite the raging fire settles down soon after. Jei, his sleep disturbed, suddenly brings his yari to bear on Usagi, babbling about how he is a messenger of the gods and that Usagi cannot hide his evil nature. Now fully awake and sword drawn tries to work out what Jei is talking about while not getting his head taken off. When Jei kicks Usagi through a wall, the battle is carried outside where Jei has the advantage. He survives what would ordinarily be a mortal would delivered by Usagi and becomes convinced that Usagi's death is what he needs to attain his godhood. Usagi is knocked down when lightning strikes a nearby tree and Jei takes full advantage. Raising his yari into a jodan stance he rushes to strike Usagi, but the lightning is faster, catching the metal and Jei along with it. Morning sees Usagi awake and barely alive with nothing left of Jei but the mangled remains of his yari. Did he join the gods or was he just a mad samurai obliterated by lightning?
